Growing up in an AKC German Shepherd Kennel – yes, one run actually had my name on it – taught me more about animals and sensing what they need when they need it than any ordinary childhood. I actually understood dog talk before human speech. I’ve midwifed puppies from Cairn Terriers to Newfoundlands, clutches of cockatiel chicks, a few foals, and possibly 100 litters of kittens (all of them ended up in great homes!) Yup – Ellie May only had the millions and a cement pond over me! Oh wait, we made a cement pond for the French ducks we raised one year!
